PHYSICAL EDUCATION AT POUND RIDGE SCHOOL
Physical education is an important aspect of a child's development. This being true, time is spent in each class to develop their physical fitness, their coordination, and their sportsmanship skills. Each lesson will begin with a short 3-4 minute exercise period stressing either strength development , flexibility, and/or cardiovascular endurance. The remainder of the class will involve both instruction and practice of locomotor or manipulative skills. The degree of instruction as well as the use of various manipulatives (bean bags, ropes, hoops, balls, etc. is dependent upon the grade and skill level. Games are also utilized to practice the various athletic skills as well as promote sportsmanship skills.
All classes will meet twice a week for thirty minute physical education classes. The children are required to wear proper athletic footwear. The footwear must have shoe laces or velcro to fasten securely. Rubber soled shoes and "platform" sneakers are not acceptable, as they are not safe.
If your child is to be excused from physical education class on any given day, please send a note. Extended exclusion from class will require a doctor's note to the school nurse.
WHY DO CHILDREN NEED PHYSICAL EDUCATION?
There are numerous reasons for children to have physical education. Some of the reasons are:
1. Strengthen Peer Relationships -- Physical education can be a major force in helping children socialize with others more successfully. Especially during late childhood, being able to participate in games, dances, and sports is an important part of fitting in.
2. Improve Judgement -- Quality physical education can influence moral development. Students have the opportunity to assume leadership, cooperate with others, question actions and regulations, and accept responsibility for their own behavior.
3. Skill Development -- Physical education develops skills which allow for enjoyable and rewarding participation in physical activities.
4. Improve Self-Confidence and Self-Esteem -- Physical education instills a stronger sense of self-worth in children. They can become more assertive, confident, emotionally stable, independent, and self-controlled.
5. Improve Physical Fitness -- A good physical education program will improve children's strength flexibility, muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance, and body composition (fat to muscle ratio).
6. More Active Lifestyle -- Physical education promotes a more positive attitude towards physical activity.
